The Licence Pathway

In the UK, there's a clear progression from your first time on a bike to holding a full, unrestricted motorcycle licence. Here's how it works:

  • CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) — The starting point. A one-day course that covers the fundamentals and lets you ride up to 125cc on L-plates. Valid for two years. Available from age 16 (moped) or 17 (motorcycle).
  • A1 Licence — Available from age 17. Covers bikes up to 125cc and 11kW. Requires a theory test and two-part practical test (Module 1 off-road, Module 2 on-road).
  • A2 Licence — Available from age 19. Covers bikes up to 35kW (roughly 47bhp). Same test format as A1. This is where most riders start to access a much wider range of bikes.
  • Full A Licence (DAS) — Available from age 24 via Direct Access, or from age 21 if you've held an A2 for at least two years. No power restrictions — ride whatever you want.

What We Offer

LozMoto isn't a training school — but we're the link between you and some of the best training providers in the Southampton area. Here's how we can help:

  • CBT booking assistance — We'll connect you with a reputable local training provider and help you get booked in. No trawling through Google reviews wondering who's legit.
  • DAS and progressive access courses — Ready to go for your full licence? We'll help you find the right course, whether that's Direct Access from scratch or progressive access from your A2.
  • Advanced riding courses — Already licensed but want to sharpen your skills? Advanced courses can make a real difference to your confidence and safety on the road.
  • Refresher courses — Been off the bike for a while? A refresher day can get your confidence back before you start riding regularly again.

What to Expect on Your CBT

Your CBT is a full-day course split into five elements. You'll start with an introduction to the bike and its controls, then move on to slow-speed riding in a controlled area — things like figure-of-eights, emergency stops, and u-turns. After that, it's a classroom session covering road awareness and hazard perception, followed by a supervised ride on actual roads with your instructor.

Don't worry about being a complete beginner — that's exactly who it's designed for. The instructors are patient, the bikes are easy to handle, and by the end of the day, most people are surprised at how much they've picked up. And once you've passed, come and see us. Loz will help you find the perfect first bike to suit your budget and riding goals.

Beyond Training — Your First Bike

Passing your test is just the beginning. Choosing the right first bike is a big decision, and it's one we love helping with. Whether you need a reliable 125 for commuting, a fun A2-legal naked bike, or you've gone straight for the full licence and want something with a bit more character, we've got the experience and the stock to match you with the right machine. We'll also sort finance if you need it, and we can deliver it straight to your door.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a CBT course take?

A CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) course takes one full day, usually around 6-7 hours. It covers the basics — bike controls, slow-speed manoeuvres, and a road ride with an instructor. Once you've passed, your CBT certificate is valid for two years and lets you ride up to 125cc on L-plates.

What's the difference between A1, A2, and full A licence?

An A1 licence (from age 17) lets you ride bikes up to 125cc and 11kW. An A2 licence (from age 19) covers bikes up to 35kW (around 47bhp). A full A licence (from age 24, or 21 with progressive access from A2) removes all power restrictions — you can ride anything. Each level requires passing both a theory test and a practical test.

Do I need my own bike for training?

No — all training schools provide bikes for you to learn on. They'll also provide helmets and other safety gear if you don't have your own. Once you've passed your test and are ready to buy, that's where we come in. We'll help you find the right first bike for your licence category and experience level.

How old do I need to be to start riding?

You can take your CBT from age 16 for mopeds (up to 50cc) or from age 17 for motorcycles up to 125cc. From there, you can progress through the licence categories as you get older — A1 at 17, A2 at 19, and full A at 24 (or 21 if you've held an A2 for at least two years).
